In September, many people started receiving a script error when opening Sage 50. Sage quickly released a fix for the problem, but only for version 2024. It is supposed to install automatically. But if you use Sage 50 20204 and are still getting the the script error, open Sage 50 by right-clicking on your Sage 50 icon and choose Run As Administrator. After you log into your company, go to the Services menu and Check For Updates. Even if it says no updates were found, it should find the update and download it. Now exit Sage 50 and the update should automatically install in the background.

If you are using Sage 50 2023 or older, there is a manual fix. But first, let me give a couple of disclaimers. (1) In my limited testing, I haven’t found any problems that result from this work-around. But I can’t guarantee there won’t be a side effect that I haven’t found yet. (2) This involves renaming files. If done incorrectly, you could potentially damage your Sage 50 installation in a way that requires you to reinstall. As I’ve mentioned before, versions 2019 and older can no longer be reinstalled because of a problem with the activation. So follow these steps at your own risk.

If I haven’t scared you away, here is all you need to do.

  • Open File Explorer
  • In the address bar (the text box at the top of the window) type C:\PROGRAMDATA and hit enter.
  • Open the following folders: Sage > Peachtree > Vxxxx > ProductServices
(Vxxxx will be a number that varies based on your version of Sage 50. Version 2023 will be V3000, version 2022 will be V2900, etc. If you have multiple Vxxx folders, open the one with the highest number.)
  • Right-click on the folder named AdvisorLaunchpad and choose Rename. Then change the folder name in some way, such as adding OLD to the end.

Now open Sage 50. The script error should be gone. I’ve also been successful doing this when Sage 50 is locking up at the Year End Wizard prompt or Obsolesence Warning after dismissing the script error.
