As you know by now, Sage did not release version 2025 of Sage 50 on their normal schedule. Sage has released an update to delay the obsolescence message that is built into version 2024. The update is supposed to download and install automatically. If you see a message in Sage 50 v2024 (this does not apply to earlier versions) after February 4th 2025 saying your version is obsolete, don’t worry. It just means something has prevented the update from installing correctly. There are two possible fixes if you run into this.

1. Run Sage 50 as administrator and check for updates.

  • Right-click the Sage 50 shortcut and choose Run As Administrator.
  • When Sage 50 opens, go to the Services menu and choose Check for Updates, then click Check Now. Click OK on the message that there are no updates to install.
  • Close Sage 50 and reopen it.
  • The obsolescence message should be gone. If you still get it, follow the steps in option two below.

2. Replace the OBSRET.DAT file in the data path

  • Open File Explorer and go to the Sage 50 data path directory. (If you don’t know your data path, go to the File menu in Sage 50 and choose Open Company. Drag the corner of the Open Company box so you can see the full width of the Directory column. The directory, minus the last portion that resembles your company name, is your data path.)
  • Locate the OBSRET.DAT file.
  • Right click the file and choose Rename. Change the file name to OLDOBSRET.DAT.
  • Download the 2024 OBSRET.zip from from this link. https://us-kb.sage.com/portal/app/portlets/results/viewsolution.jsp?solutionid=250114172332940&hypermediatext=null

Unzip the file and copy the extracted OBSRET.DAT into the Sage 50 data path directory.
