Someone asked recently if they could create a shortcut on their desktop that would open a specific company in Sage 50. In fact it’s not hard to do at all. Since many of you maintain multiple companies I thought the answer would be worth sharing.

If you don’t already have a Sage 50 shortcut on your desktop, find Sage 50 in your Start menu, right-click on it and choose Copy; then right-click on your desktop and choose Paste. Once you have a Sage 50 (or Peachtree) shortcut on your desktop, right-click on the shortcut and choose Properties. Click in the Target field and go to the end of the text in that field (Press the End key on your keyboard.) You should see that the entry ends with …Peachw.exe”. After the quotation mark, type a space and then the name of the folder that holds the data for the company you want to open. Click OK to save your change.

If you don’t know the name of your company’s folder, open the company in Sage 50, go to the Maintain menu and choose Company Information. The Directory box displays the location of this company. For example, if you see C:\Sage\Peachtree\Company\Testcomp then Testcomp is what you need to add to the end of the target line of your shortcut.

When you are done, the Target line for the new shortcut should look something like this:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Sage\Peachtree\Peachw.exe” Testcomp

For each company that you want to be able to launch from your desktop, copy this shortcut and change the folder name at the end of the target. So you can tell them apart, right click on each shortcut, choose Rename, and type a new description for the shortcut.

Just to be clear, these shortcuts will only work if Sage 50 isn’t already open. To change companies or open multiple companies go to the File menu in Sage 50 and choose Open Company or Open Previous Company.
